The Teledyne LeCroy quantumdata M41d HBR3 Video Analyzer/Generator for DisplayPort Testing is a compact versatile test instruments offering entry level functional testing that can be extended through software licenses to full compliance testers with sophisticated analysis and diagnostic capabilities. The M41d enables design and test engineers to validate their products for interoperability and reliability for the DisplayPort 1.4 video interface. The M41d is a flexible test instrument that can be upgraded from a functional tester for sources and sinks to a sophisticated analyzer and, if desired, can test full standards compliance, enabling developers to pre-test or self-test independently, reducing delays and costs during the product development cycle.

The M41d is equipped with both DisplayPort Tx and Rx port pairs. Both standard DisplayPort and USB-C DP alt mode ports are provided for each side (Tx and Rx).  The M41d instrument supports testing up 8.1 Gb/s lane rates on 1, 2 or 4 Lane configuration.

The Teledyne LeCroy quantumdata M41d HBR3 USB-C/eDP Video Analyzer / Generator for DisplayPort Testing supports video, audio and protocol functional testing high-end DP HBR3 displays and optionally sources. The module supports HBR3 data rates including 1.62, 2.70, 5.40 & 8.10 Gbps on 1, 2 & 4 lanes on its Tx ports and its Rx port.  All features and functions are supported on both DP standard connectors and USB-C connectors using DP Alt Mode. The module features a DisplayPort video generator output for testing displays.

The M41d is equipped with all the standard video timings and test patterns necessary for testing modern displays. The module supports reading and verifying the EDID and DPCD registers of a display and now supports emulation of an Multi-Stream Transport (MST) source supporting up to four (4) downstream nodes. You can control the link training through a user friendly interface which enables you to force link training with user specified settings. The optional Auxiliary Channel Analyzer (ACA) utility enables you to view the link training transactions, EDID and HDCP exchanges, including HDCP 2.2/2.3, as well as the MST sideband messages. If you have the USB-C DP Alt mode option enabled, you can monitor the Power Deliveriy (PD) protocol negotiations into DP Alt mode through the ACA as well.

The M41d supports video generation of Display Stream Compression (DSC) and Forward Error Correction (FEC) for testing DSC-capable display devices. Users can select from several test patterns and then select the colorimetry settings and DSC slice configurations.

The M41d instrument's Rx analyzer port emulates a DisplayPort display device including EDID and DPCD emulation, Rx Link Training function and MST Rx function. The Basic analyzer option enables you to view the real time video, main link video parameters and the secondary data packets.

The M41d analyzer function also enables you to capture and store the incoming DisplayPort stream from a source for detailed analysis of the main stream protocol elements including the main stream attributes and secondary data elements. The module’s DSC analysis feature enables developers to view the DisplayPort DSC related protocol elements such as the picture parameter set, end of chunk packets and compression flag settings in the VBID to ensure that these elements are occurring in the video stream and that they are occurring in the proper sequence. The DSC analysis feature also captures and decompresses the video frames enabling developers to examine them for compression artifacts. The Forward Error Correction (FEC) transport mechanism, which ensures reliable, error free video transport, can also be verified. Test engineers can also verify the DSC compressed stream using the Test CRC registers in the module's DPCD registers.

The M41d USB-C Video Generator / Analyzer module now supports link layer compliance tests for source and sink devices including tests for Display Stream Compression (DSC) and Forward Error Correction (FEC) tests. The DP module also supports HDCP 2.2 compliance testing for sources sinks and repeaters. This solution has been approved by Digital Content Protection (DCP).

For developers of Embedded DisplayPort (eDP), the new module offers the hardware necessary to support a variety of optional eDP features. Initial support includes fast link training, Advanced Link Power Management (ALPM) and backlight control eiither through control pins or aux channel transactions with the eDP display's DPCD registers. A pin header is available to provide access to the backlight Tx control test feature.

The following are a list of features and benefits for the M41d HBR3 Video Analyzer / Generator. Refer to the Options tab for information on optional features.

Video Pattern Testing – Test a DisplayPort 1.4 display’s inputs with over 600 standard formats to ensure that it can render video test patterns including. Over 300 video patterns supported. Create your own custom formats using the user friendly Format Editor. Scroll bitmap patterns to test for motion artifacts. Create custom test pattern lists and custom format lists to facilitate testing.

Display Stream Compression (DSC) Video Generator option – The M41d’s DSC/FEC video generator feature enables display developers to transmit DSC/FEC streams. Users can selection from several test patterns and configure the colorimetry and DSC slice configurations.

Protocol Testing – The M41d offers a variety of features for testing DisplayPort protocols. The module’s EDID Decode feature enables you to examine the EDID of the connected display in human readable text. The DPCD Decode feature enables you to examine the DPCD registers of the connected display in human readable text.

Protocol Analysis - The M41d's optional Rx analyzer port emulates a DisplayPort display device including EDID and DPCD emulation, Rx Link Training function and MST Rx function. The Basic analyzer option enables you to view the real time video, main link video parameters and the secondary data packets. The analyzer also enables you to capture and store the incoming DisplayPort stream from a source for detailed analysis of the main stream protocol elements including the main stream attributes and secondary data elements. The trigger mechanisms for the capture analysis function enable developers to set conditions to ensure that the captured data includes the information they are most interested in.

Display Stream Compression (DSC) Analysis option – The M41d DSC analysis feature enables developers to view the DisplayPort DSC video and metadata in real time as well as related protocol elements such as the picture parameter set, end of chunk packets and compression flag settings in the VBID to ensure that these elements are occurring in the video stream and that they are occurring in the proper sequence. The DSC analysis feature also captures and decompresses the video frames enabling developers to examine them for compression artifacts. The Forward Error Correction (FEC) transport mechanism, which ensures reliable, error free video transport, can also be verified. Test engineers can also verify the DSC compressed stream using the Test CRC registers in the module's DPCD registers.

Link Training Configuration Utility – The link training control features enables you to configure the module’s link training parameters during testing. You can set limits on the lane count and link rate and allow the link training engine to establish link training based on those limitations or you can force link training parameters—lane count, link rate, voltage swing, pre-emphasis.

HDCP Testing – Verify a downstream DisplayPort display’s response to HDCP 1.3 or HDCP 2.2 authentication. View status of authentication and exchange of registers. Support also includes HDCP 2.2 Compliance Testing for source, display and repeater devices.

Multi-Stream Transport Testing – Emulate an MST source for testing an MST branch device or MST-capable monitor. Up to four (4) streams are supported depending on bandwidth (resolutions) with a depth of one. You can configure the MST topology using a graphical interface. Users can read the EDID and DPCD registers of specific downstream MST display nodes. The optional Auxiliary Channel Analyzer (ACA) utility depicts the MST negotiations with the connected MST sink device.

Aux Channel Monitoring - The Auxiliary Channel Analyzer (ACA) application enables you to monitor the DisplayPort Aux Channel for link training and HDCP transactions--versions 1.3 and 2.2--as well as EDID exchanges between the module and a connected display. If you have the USB-C DP Alt mode option enabled, you can monitor the Power Deliveriy (PD) protocol negotiations into DP Alt mode through the ACA as well. You can monitor in real time through the 980B’s embedded touch display and save files for later viewing or for sharing with colleagues at other locations.

Passive Aux Channel Monitoring - The M41d includes an auxiliary board and associated custom cable for passively monitoring the DisplayPort aux channel transactions  between a DisplayPort HBR3 source and sink using the familiar Auxiliary Channel Analyzer utility. The ability to passively monitor the aux channel transactions between a source and a display is invaluable in identifying the root cause of link training issues between two devices.

Link Layer Source Compliance TestRun source link layer compliance tests which test the link training and other functions at rates up to HBR3 rates.  Tests from the following Sections are supported: Link Training 4.3.1, Link Maintenance 4.3.2, Main Video 4.4.1/2, Main Audio 4.4.4, Power Management 4.4.3 and Forward Error Correction (FEC) 4.5.1.

Link Layer Sink Compliance Testhis new compliance test package (Package #3) initially includes fifty-one (51) HBR3 source link layer compliance tests which test the link training and other functions at rates up to HBR3.  Tests from the following Sections are supported: Aux Chan protocol 5.2.1, Link Training 5.3.1, Link Maintenance 5.3.2, Main Video 5.4.1/2, Main Audio 5.4.4, Power Management 5.4.3 and Forward Error Correction (FEC) 5.5.1.

DSC/FEC Compliance Test – Run Display Stream Compression (DSC) and Forward Error Correction (FEC) compliance tests on your DisplayPort source device.
