Some older 801 generators cannot be upgraded over the serial port. These older generators use socketed ROMs, which requires special equipment to install firmware updates. Newer models use flashable EPROM, which can be upgraded over a serial port.
To determine if your generator can be upgraded over the serial port, look at the back side of the generator. If you see GPIB address switches behind the vent slots, and your current firmware is newer than 3.111, then your unit can be updated over the serial port.

If you do not see the GPIB address switches, then your unit has an older socked EPROM design, and must be returned to Quantum Data for firmware updates.
